Harmony Lofts Midweek Race Result 20/08/14

As we thought today, Wednesday, turned out to be a good day to race pigeons. With a light W.N.W wind the birds made steady times. The loft of Morrison Bros, Killyleagh, had a good race to clock the first 2 birds and collecting £80 winnings. The boys were keen to point out that the winning birds were from their good friends Geraldine and Patrick Brown, Annsborough. Rodney McCormick of the McCormick and Muckle partnership from Millisle, was delighted with his birds performance as they took the next 3 spots winning £20. Congratulations to all those in the result and many thanks to all those who supported us with racers and trainers.

Unfortunately when the birds were liberated a peregrine struck. Viv and I watched a it pursued after the large batch across the sky. They then split into about ten smaller groups which seemed to be what the peregrine wanted as it selected its target. When one bird dived for cover the chase was on, dropping like a stone it attacked, but to our surprise the bird escaped with fantastic skill. It's a horrible feeling watching and you know there is nothing you can do. I hope you got all your birds home safely.

Next Wednesday will be our final midweek race this year. We will have some special prizes and also a draw. So come along, you will be very welcome.

Our Midweek race got off to a very wet start this morning with heavy rain & poor visibility. Trusting in what Barra Best had predicted that the day would improve around lunchtime we set off to Navan with both transporters & with a West North West wind it made for a very steady race. From Newry to Navan the weather was fine, high cloud & the sun peeping through. Our planned lib time was 12.15 but on phoning our contacts en-route home we decided to hold the birds to 1.15. This proved to be the correct decision & the birds were liberated at 1.15 & cleared immediately. With the west in the wind the fast birds were next the coast. The in form loft of Tommy Horner Crossgar had a super day taking the top 3 positions with his Harmony Lofts team of young birds. As you can see from the result many of the lofts were clocking within seconds of each other. Many thanks to the great support for our Midweek race, also to the faithful helpers who make race marking run smoothly each week.

NIPA NOTES

SECTIONS C , D , F & G

The NIPA were in St Malo for their annual old bird national event . After a one day holdover the birds were released on Sunday 29th June @ 7.30 am . Wind at the release site was a light west/north westerly breeze . The NIPA have witnessed one of the hardest channel seasons to date and St Malo was again a hard testing event . Topping the NIPA O/B National , winning the News Of The World Cup , McComb & Pigeon Portal.com Cups was Hector Cordner from Annaghmore. Hector timed at 11.08 pm . Hector found the game yearling in the corrider of the loft but no matter it turned out to be this years eventful winner in one of the hardest O/B National events in recent years . The yearling red hen was Hector's 6th bird home in the INFC Yearling National and was sent to St Malo sitting on overdue eggs. Breeding : Sire is mainly Busschaert . Dam is Jan Theelan , purchased from Ian Axe . Hectors now adds an Old Bird National victory to his cv having topped the INFC Y/B National from Penzance only last season . Robert McDowall - Annsborough - Pictured admiring his Millar Gold Cup Winner

The 2014 Millar Gold Cup Winner
Captured on camera closely guarding his nest

MILLAR GOLD CUP

Without a doubt , one of the most coveted awards to be won , within the membership of the IHU members only , the length and breadth of Ireland , is The Millar Gold Cup. This is one of the most valuable cups in the sport and was presented to the Irish Homing Union in 1948 by Mr Thomas Millar of 43 Flora Street in the City of Belfast. It was agreed that the pigeon racing trophy known as the Millar Gold Cup was to be competed for each year from the longest Old Bird race organised by the Irish Grand National Amalgamation, ( under the auspices of the Irish Homing Union), and that to be won outright the said cup must be won 10 times in all by said competitor or partnerships and that said competitor or partners must race from a loft situation in Ireland, and that all persons competing for the said Millar Gold Cup must be members of the Irish Homing Union paying such dues and that on these terms all past winner of the Millar Gold Cup be allowed to compete for this trophy. This years winner timing @ 9.25 pm on the day of toss , beating all racing organisations in Ireland , flying from St Malo was the partnership of R McDowell & Son of Annsborough. Robert is the sole racer and keeps the family name to the fore with the weekends performance . Their latest top performer is a yearling blue cock , sent to St Malo feeding youngsters 2/3 days old. His preparation prior to St Malo was the two Talbennys flying with the EDC then rested prior to St Malo . The McDowell partnership were previous winners of the EDC O/B Derby from Lamballe and this hen also was 2nd & 34th Open Lamballe . The Sire of the Millar Gold Cup Winner is a direct son of the Lamballe O/B Derby winner Dam of the Millar Gold Cup Winner was a gift bird from Lecky Bros & Davies , famous for racing " Champion Longstone Lass " . When speaking to Robert to congratulate him on winning the Millar Gold Cup , he was over the moon with the performances of his blue cock . Congratulations Robert on your recent top success. A top result in one of the hardest races in recent years .
